The hell’s bell was lowered as Brian ran from around 75-100 ft out from the top of the catwalk to ring the bell. All I could say was ‘wow!’ watching Johnson run that far and leap up onto the bell. The Back in Black classic boomed across the stadium and the fans ate it up.
Following that in logical track sequence form Back in Black, came “Shoot to Thrill.” Another AC/DC classic played live at huge volume. During its last section the crowd clapped along as Johnson led them along. The claps echoed loudly!
Black Ice’s “War Machine” followed and they must have had fun making the video for the jumbo trons. It featured the Angus statue “Junior” from the Stiff Upper Lip Tour, AC/DC female soldiers, Brian driving a tank, Malcolm, Cliff, and Phil firing cannons off a pirate ship (with AC/DC logoed balls) and a bomber plane dropping Gibson SG guitars from its bottom at high altitude. This video made the song more fun!
Back to the Bon period as the power chord stomp of “Dog Eat Dog” ripped through the air. I still think this is one of Angus most powerful solos. Even though its only two notes played together in two chord changes, it’s another way of thinking of how to solo. Not to mention duck walking too while doing it.
The jangle of “Anything Goes” from Black Ice followed, and I’ve always felt that the song sounds like something out of soccer stadiums in Europe. The song definitely worked at Canad Inns Stadium, as the crowd took it in and rocked away.
The wedding/social staple “You Shook Me All Night Long” followed and the chorus had once again everyone in the stadium singing at full capacity. This was a song that did not disappoint. This was a full party tune going on at an AC/DC party in Winnipeg.
“TNT” followed which I believe was the loudest crowd participation I’d heard throughout the entire night. With the Angus chant of ‘Oi Oi Oi’ and the chorus being belted by the crowd it sent chills down my spine and I thought “HOLY SH*T! THIS IS MAGIC”
“We brought and old girlfriend with us. Here names Rosie,” Brian introduced the Bon Scott penned “Whole Lotta Rosie.” And sure enough, the giant inflatable Rosie appeared on the train which was the backdrop for the stage. The simple 4 chord riff which is A C D C, pounded through the air as the crowd chanted “Angus!” in the breaks to the blues style riff.
Phil Rudd pounded away as he led into “Let There Be Rock.” This tune was a soloing bonanza from Angus as he went all out. Including, soloing on a lift some 90 ft out off the catwalk that rose 15-20 feet in the air and exploding confetti on the floor area. Then Angus soloed back to the stage and came to stay above Phil Rudd’s drum kit and solo again. This time, he fed off the crowd even more and got them chanting as he had breaks in-between licks. Then as he finished played like he was a possessed blues man, Angus leapt on stage and the band finished their main set.
