Background

I was recently able to get a hold of information about the Nutcrackers bootlegs. The following is the information I was able to gather about their background and the origination of the recordings.

While recording the Ballbreaker album back in 1995 in New York and Los Angeles, AC/DC was working with producer Rick Rubin, with whom they had previously worked with on the song 'Big Gun' for the Last Action Here film. While the album went on to sell in excess of 2 million copies, the band was not always happy while working with Rubin. It has been reported that Rubin was slightly obsessive-compulsive, spending weeks tweeking the drum kit alone. He also preferred to work different hours than what the band preffered; he would show up in the early afternoon, medicate & meditate for a while, and then finally start in with the band during the late afternoon/early evening hours. The band, being the work horses they have always been, preferred to show up and work right away. So while Rubin was doing his thing, the band was in the studio going over riffs, working out meladies & lyrics, and shooting the shit for half of the day.

Fast forward to sometime in 1996. A collector had a chance encounter with someone who, through some unknown capacity (but allegedly a disgruntled custodian), had obtained 2 cassette tapes of the in-studio time the band spent rehearsing. The time captured on these tapes was spent mostly chatting and joking around with various 'guests'. The tapes did also contain a good deal of adhoc jamming and song rehearsals. It is unknown at this time if these tapes are part of the reported 50+ hours of tapes from the New York sessions, or are from the sessions recorded in Los Angeles. It seems more likely that the tapes are from the New York sessions as more was supposedly recorded there than in Los Angeles, where the recording process went much more smoothly.

The majority of the material on the tapes is mostly dead air and conversation between the band members, but there were some nice jam sessions recorded as well as warm up versions of Hail Caesar (as released on Nutcrackers Vol 2) and a few other tracks. Unfortunately, there are no unreleased songs on these tapes; all of the material is similar to that which became the Ballbreaker album, or are simple jam sessions with the band making up songs as they go (i.e. She's My Babe from Volume 1. As of now, She's My Babe and Caesar Salad have been released on Nutcrackers Vol 1 & 2 respectively. There is also supposedly a short snippet at the end of the Uncovered Complete bootleg LP, but this has not been confirmed.
