What Happened To Brian from 1-20-85 to 5-28-85
As many of you know, Brians voice was oddly ruined from Rio to the release of fly on the wall. Upon hours, and hours of listening to audio footage, I came to the conclusion Brian was going strong from the Flick of the switch tour to Rio. (As in he sounded great) He took a huge dive on the fly on the wall album.. But why? Obviously he wasn't touring, so How did his voice get ruined? Post your thoughts here. My thought is that the Fly on The Wall demo's are what killed him... Some how.
BRIAN'S VOICE IS REALLY DEEP AND HE NEED TO USE A REALLY HIGH-PITCHED VOICE TONE, SO, IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE FLICK OF THE SWITCH REHEARSAL VIDEOS (ALL OF THEM), IN GUNS FUR HIRE,FLICK OF SWITH & NERVOUS SHAKEDOWN BRIAN HAVE REALLY BAD VOICE PROBLEMS. BRIAN ISN'T A HIGH-PITCHED SINGER (LIKE BON SCOTT) SO HE ALLWAYS NEED TO FORCE HIS VOICE. AND THATS THE PROBLEM. IN FACT I WENT THE PAST 12-NOVEMBER TO THE ACDC'S MEXICO CITY GIG, AND IN BACK IN BLACK THE BRIAN'S VOICE SUDDENLY WAS MISSING-....(....!!!!?) SO I PREFER BON SCOTT SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH.
That took a few reads to understand. And it makes sense. But I doubt recording Fly on the wall would have been so bad as to cripple his voice, even if he does have to force it.
I'm surprised Brian's voice is holding up as well as it is on the Black Ice tour. You may complain about the setlist, but you've gotta admit that Brian puts on a hell of a show night after night after night, and his voice sounds as good now as it ever has.
Yeah. Something must have gone horribly right with this surgery... Yet I want to hear some theories of the extrem rapid decay from rio to fly on the wall! Someone must have theories!
Type in Vocal Folds to s/engine and check the Wiki page. Basically like any living thing, it's parts are designed so it reaches a peak, and it's all downhill from there. Vocal cords are no different, and are probably the biggest factor. Now, add that to the style of singing, which seemed for the most part, not his natural range, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, length of sets/ tours, by this time his voice would naturally decline. Along with Bon, you can basically tell the year of the tour by voice alone. The period you mention wasn't a good one, and it's reflected by the material/ live shows. He now sings as if he's had coaching, imo.
I don't know why people always say Brian lost his voice in '85. It got rougher but he could still hit every note he could in '80. Now during the FOTS rehearsals, he was obviously beat but he recovered for the tour. You can barely hear Brian in FOTW so it's tough to make judgments anyway. If you want to talk about rapid decay what about '88-'90 or '93 (Big Gun)-'95?
Brians voice has gotten more gravelly and raspy over the years but that's what happens with age.
