i think its eather a tape recorder, or a guitar tuner. but i might be WAY off.

It is a guitar tuner. I believe it uses the guitars' harmonics for tuning. Remember, it was 1979. Tuners have come a long way since then.

Agree. It's a guitar tuner. That's why every time he touched a string the red light would go on and that was also why when Malcolm was tuning his guitar, he looked up a of couple times to make sure that the red light was on.
