Practice. I don't know why people think there's some trick or easy way to learn how to play an instrument well.

Well...it'll definitely build your patience, and your rhythm. I know from experience on guitar that sometimes you can tend to overplay something you've become familiar with, and while it may seem "old" to you, the people who are hearing it don't notice it half the time. But yeah...worry less about speed, speed will come with practice, just worry about building a good foundation, cause without that foundation, all your banging is just banging, and not playing.
