Next Album Wishlist
I know, I know; but I'm a greedy fucker and I just heard in an interview with Malcolm that another album is in the works and so the gears are a'turnin'. This is my wishlist for what very may well be the band's last (though two more is a possibility in my wildest dreams): Give us some stripped down stuff like Powerage Give us some anthem stuff like DDDDC Give us another classic ode to Rock N' Roll like RARANP Give us more hooks like Moneytalks Yet more anthem stuff like Thunderstruck Something nasty like Hard as a Rock Something Bluesy like SUL Something else nasty like Satellite Blues Something off the chain-gang like Money Made I realize everybody's got their likes, but what's stopping the band from taking the sound of Powerage, the riffs of SUL, and the lyrics of Ballbreaker and putting out the most kickass album yet?
Doesn't surprise me that they're coming out with a new album.
i want it to be like black ice with all the fillers better
oh is there gunna be another? i HEARD that they signed for two albums, i figured this iron man 2 soundtrack was their way of screwing us out of it, not the bash the band, but thats kinda what they been doing to us, but new one? hell yeah is what im talkin about
I just hope it's an album where Brian gets to write again. He was supposed to have written on Black Ice, but alas the album credits say "Young/Young." Interestingly enough though, if you go on Guitar World's website and pull up the official GW magazine tabs for the Black Ice songs, it says "Words and music by Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Brian Johnson"...wait, yep, it mentions Brian.
something faster paced like Landslide from FOTS (best-produced album IMHO) would be nice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKwuvO6VpfA&feature=youtube_gdata
And yea, it'd be great if Brian would write again. And I'd like to hear a mix of the ballbreaker/SUL screaming and the BI singing. He sounded really good doing Gone Shootin' in '96; I wouldn't mind hearing more of that sort of thing. My other big request (mentioned above) is a collective of good riffs with a clean sound. Powerage. BI is a great album, but I'd like the next one to sound more "real".
oh, man that was before Backtracks and WAY before from Iron Man 2..... you should check things before doing this... NO NEW ALBUM (for now)
Just because this was before Backtracks & Iron Man 2 doesn't mean NO NEW ALBUM (for now). They could be using these breaks to write new material instead of changing the setlist like everybody wants them to.
Yeah, that's an old interview... BUT You really think they'd go out on Iron Man 2?? Simple answer, NO
If you listen to the video carefully you'll hear a direct reference to new material. This is mentioned in addition to backtracks (the compilation). There is no new material on Iron Man. And, if you look at the comments, the author emphasizes that the album Malcolm is referring to is not Iron Man 2. YOU should check these things before lecturing others. Malcolm could well have been referring to either of those, but there is at least as much indication that his reference is to a new album as there is that he's referring to BT or IM.
Steve Sisk... I HAVE read the comments, saw this when it was first uploaded thank you.Check the comments for nitroass23...(that'd be me) This was before Iron Man 2 was even on the bands table, this was referring to Backtracks. but anyways, Iron Man 2 wont be the last "album" I'm 100% sure. -Cheers
This article is slightly more recent, Boothjorden posted it back in February. Near the end of the article Brian mentions a possible follow up to Black Ice and how the band doesn't feel they're done which is why they wont release a greatest hits album. http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/johnson-tells-acdc-sceptics-to-take-a-walk/story-e6frfn09-1225826630451
They don't even play 80% of the songs they have written, so I see no point for a new album. AC/DC have never been one for "Greatest Hits", but there's been an awful lot of "Greatest Hits" albums and DVDs put out by them in the last 10 years or so: Iron Man 2 Backtracks Plug Me In Family Jewels All the live tour DVDs (the same old "hits" over and over again) How much of these are contractual obligations albums? Probably all of them. AC/DC signed their contract with Sony in the early 00s. If it was anything like Aerosmith's contract, it cost Sony an awful lot of money and was probably for at least 10 Sony "new releases." At the time, AC/DC were probably like, "Oh yeah, we have a lot of ideas, no problem" and they said as much in interviews. They were talking about a new album in 2002, 2003 and 2005 and nothing happened, except... DVD and box set releases happened. Multiple DVD and box set releases... No doubt all of these multiple disc releases have fulfilled significant parts of their Sony contract while also creating a nice backfill of retirement money for the boys. Black Ice put them one step closer and the one or two DVDs that come out of the McTour should fulfill a bit more (so far, Paris and Buenos Aires have been filmed and it's likely Download 2010 will be filmed and probably recorded for a live album, too, especially if they perform the complete BiB album). Then, they probably just need one more album to end their contract. My hopes for the new album (of which we will never hear all of the songs live by anybody except an AC/DC cover band): Mutt Lange as producer with George Young and Harry Vanda floating around somewhere, too. Go out the same way you came in - classic, awesome, rocking, exceptional, but in touch with your history and background...Maybe even record a few covers for the bonus CD or something...
Flick, I wasn't talking to you, but to matirocker.
Malcolm's nephew seems to think there will be another album... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrQXadWxks&feature=related
IF they make one more album then brian should write lyrics because they are much bttr than ang and mal lyrics and that they should make it sound like Powerage or Flick of the switch. As for the filler tracks dont make any, if you cant write 15 songs to put on a cd then write something more like 10
Steve: I was reffering to a new album, but with NO new material, I mean, that was the thing being talked. "something new" could mean a lot of things... for of course, "for now!" because AC/DC can announce a new album tomorrow, we never know!
I think i was the one that first mentioned the specific Malcolm interview so here is my thoughts. AC/DC will want to make a new album. There are some tricks here... 1)If they rush it so they don't get older and can perform (to get $$$$$$$$$$) i believe the album would be the worst of their career. 2)If they stall it so they can work it out better then probably will not be in a condition to perform.Angus is, how old? If i were the greedy bastard that they have shown us to be, i would have chosen no 1. So i say be prepared for an album in the next 2-3 years tops. matirocker i would also suggest to keep calling me and a$$hole instead of proclaiming news from time to time, because you don't have a clue. And this is to protect all of us from getting all the false rumors, if you know what i mean.
My dream for the next album would be an Iron Maiden style album. That means an anthem or two, several 6 minute+ epics and more deep songwriting. I'm not saying change their style, just do something more like Riff Raff (Riff Raff had unusually long instrumental breaks for an AC/DC song and was a more focused effort, for lack of a better description). And instead of touring, how about doing a shitload of songs they'd never play in addition to the new album in it's entirety in a studio setting like VH1 '96? Then maybe some club dates doing stuff from a specific era that they haven't played in a long time.
I don't see why they can't do a new album in a couple of years, they should have hundreds of ideas by now, whether it be riffs or lyrics, it couldn't be hard to put them together and record it. I like the idea of them doing another VH1 show or shows with different songs we haven't heard live. Would keep us a bit happier
I'm with suicidehummer on this: More on the deep songwriting, less on the surface flash. Steve: Your original request says, "something anthemic like...", but can you tell me what that means? I'll give you my interpretation: AC/DC used to write very good songs, but they were also anthems of certain feelings, anxieties, needs for release, etc teenagers/adults/people can feel at the best and worst of time: Dirty Deeds: Tongue-in-cheek badass anthem Problem Child: Same Bad Boy Boogie: Same Highway to Hell: Life on the road anthem, metaphor for shitty life that you're determined to enjoy anyways Back in Black: Comeback anthem following potential end of band For Those About to Rock: Speaks for itself Then, things begin to fall off a bit. In other words, the songs sound like "anthems", but what are they anthems of? Guns for Hire: ???? Fly on the Wall: ???? Heatseeker: ???? Not that these songs aren't listenable, they're just "anthems" without the actual "anthem" part. They're kind of like photocopies of anthems... Then, AC/DC get pissed off and make a sort of recovery: Thunderstruck: Comeback anthem #2 after everyone was writing them off as Honeymoon Suite type has-beens. Then, we're off the wagon again - "anthemic" without "anthems": Hard as a Rock: ??? Stiff Upper Lip: ??? Runaway Train: anthem for Lindsay Lohan/Amy Winehouse type trainwrecks???? Sounds great, but ultimately meaningless. Of course, this could just be a matter of AC/DC and/or the record company picking bad singles as the "anthemic" opening release of an album. Maybe it could have been rectified with: Nervous Shakedown: "I fought the law" type anthem Sink the Pink: Sex/stripper anthem (Shake Your Foundations would have done well, too) Back in Business: Comeback anthem #2 Ballbreaker: Sex/bondage anthem (and 1000% better than Hard as a Rock) Can't Stop RnR: RnR Anthem a la RnR Ain't Noise Pollution and For Those About to Rock and much better opener than SUL Skies on Fire or War Machine: War anthems, I guess, if you're really really looking for an anthem... Back to suicide's point, sure, we all really love the "anthems" and they draw us in, but they have to be anthems about something, don't they? Not pleasant-sounding, ultimately pointless anthems like Runaway Train and some of the songs cited above. So AC/DC, if you're going to insist on putting out another album of which we'll hear only a fraction of the songs live, focus on the songwriting. I don't care about the anthems - you wrote plenty of anthems for teenagers back when you were young and they're still great even as all of us age into old men. Just write from the heart, write what you're feeling, write whatever angers or pleases you. No matter what you write, it's going to "sound like AC/DC" because YOU ARE AC/DC. Don't sound like anybody but yourself, even if you end up writing a heartfelt ballad - it will be AC/DC because YOU ARE AC/DC. Take a page from the Neil Young school of integrity and stick to your soul, not to the money. "This Note's For You" Don't want no cash Don't need no money Ain't got no stash This note's for you. Ain't singin' for Pepsi Ain't singin' for Coke I don't sing for nobody Makes me look like a joke This note's for you. Ain't singin' for Miller Don't sing for Bud I won't sing for politicians Ain't singin' for Spuds This note's for you. Don't need no cash Don't want no money Ain't got no stash This note's for you. I've got the real thing I got the real thing, baby I got the real thing Yeah, alright. Ain't singin for Sony...
I would really love to have longer songs, something we didn't have on Black Ice. For Those About To Rock, Gone Shootin, Riff Raff, Ain't No Fun, that kind of song, and not 15 three minutes song with the same base (although I loved them =P)
What kind of anthems? Rockin' ones. You can get philosophical about it, but why? To me that kills the spirit of the music, even if your analysis is spot on. I'm as much of a thinker a the next guy (usually more so), but this is a subject about which I refuse to ponder.
"What kind of anthems? Rockin' ones. You can get philosophical about it, but why? To me that kills the spirit of the music, even if your analysis is spot on." Let me put it another way: Dirty Deeds, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Thunderstruck, Shake Your Foundations, The Furor, I can listen to 1000 times and never get tired of them. They're genuine anthems with genuine content, even if it's just about fucking. SUL, Hard as a Rock, Runaway Train: You can float on the surface, get caught up in the hook and the melody and think "This is fucking great!" and then the minute you start to sing along, you go, "Huh? WTF is this?" and the song promptly becomes a one-hit wonder bore. If I wanted to listen to one-hit wonder boring pop music, I wouldn't be a hardcore AC/DC fan who loves them not only for their music, but for their substance (when they had it). So I may be getting philosophical, but it's only because I'm trying to understand why Highway to Hell will ALWAYS work and Runaway Train sorta kinda works and unfortunately for AC/DC, they set themselves up to a pretty high standard when they broke through with the Highway to Hell album and close examination of the albums which preceded it leads to the conclusion, "Hey, these may just be a collection of songs about fucking, but there's actually some underlying substance and story here which keeps me coming back for more. Cool."
I hear you. But at the same time, I quite like Hard as a Rock and Stiff Upper Lip. They are a little less encapsulating of a particular time or life experience, but they're good in their own right. I'm more with you on RNR Train. It's a hook machine, but what else is their to it? Hard as a Rock drips sex, SUL is kind of a badass commentary on a guy who can't reform, and RNR Train is about, well, I don't know. A train running off the tracks? From that album I much prefer Big Jack (which, superficial as it may be, is at least about a guy who likes to have a good time) and Money Made.
Although i may agree on some point, i totally disagree for Ballbreaker album.for me, it's the best f#cking album since Flick. Of course totally disagree about Hard as. And i was pissed that they didn't play it but let's not get there again. Ok putting Ballbreaker right now....
Hey Sap: Just to clarify: I love Ballbreaker. I think it's one of the best Brian albums and if AC/DC were smart and could drop their egos for 1/4 of a second to take some constructive criticism, they'd work with Rubin until the end of their careers (unless Mutt offered to produce an album, of course). Hard as a Rock, though, isn't that great. It's borderline acceptable, but really, it's kind of boring. But there are some real treasures on that album, of which Ballbreaker, The Furor, Burnin' Alive and Hail Caesar rank at the very top. Now, why is Ballbreaker so good? No doubt it's Rick Rubin's fault. And what do Ang and Mal have to say about Rick Rubin? "We actually thought he was kind of a phony. He seemed more concerned with the sound of the drums than anything." Yes, because Rubin built his fucking career on emulating the Vanda/Young big drum/pure guitar sound with the Beastie Boys, Run DMC and everyone else he produced in his early years. I suspect that's not the only reason they despise him, though. Judging by the significantly better lyrics to be found on Ballbreaker as compared to SUL, Rubin probably said the same thing Steve, Sap and I are saying: "The first drafts are OK, but how about you work a little harder and put some substance into them? Make them about something." To which the Brothers Young probably replied, "Hey, we know what our fans want. Fuck you," but went and rewrote them anyways and ended up with far better songs than they would have been otherwise. As for the band claiming to know what the fans want, sure they do - on a very surface level. The fans want something "anthemic" and they "want to have a good time". Who doesn't? But we're all human and we appreciate the depth and humour AC/DC lyrics used to have, so a bit of that would be nice, too. We all know Brian's capable - his marijuana songs for that documentary a couple years back were hilarious. So let's hope the next album is a collaboration - not just Angus and Malcolm dictating what the idiot lyrics will be on top of their awesome riffs.
I second being pissed that Hard as a Rock wasn't played this tour. I know this has been hashed through a thousand times, but I've never been a part of it. Shot Down in Flames would've been nice, but that's all I'll say. And maybe SUL. Alright, that's all from me. I also understand the feeling that HAR is a little boring. I love the live versions, but when I go back to the original from those it's a little slow and lackluster. At the end of the day I'll leave it to the boys to know what's best. For the record though: More Powerage would be nice.
Nice post RnRDamnation. I really don't know if they hated Rubin or if Rubin made the album good or DC made it good but it's good.SUL is also a great album but i prefer Ballbreaker overall. The point is, do you honestly think that they can deliver such an album now?I mean they had 7 years to do Black Ice and, for me, it's their worst album and i cannot find their second worst album, if you are getting me.
If you notice,it seems like every time the band has a successful/popular album that makes a lot of money, the follow up album/albums are almost always less successful and mainstream? Example: Back In Black The Successful Album, For Those About To Rock The Less Popular/Mainstream Album (although it could have been if it weren't in Back In Black's shadow) Then You Have Flick Of The Switch, and Fly On The Wall were the band lose popularity and money. And also have a harder edge and sound. Blow Up Your Video starts a semi-comeback,but doesn't quite do it. The Razors Edge broke the losing streak in the sales department and got them back into the lime light. Then Ball Breaker and Stiff Upper Lip return them back to the less popular album phase.(Why that happens is beyond me) Then after 8 years of being gone, they had to do a "popular" one to gain interest for them selves again. i.e. Black Ice Now,I for one am all for the less popular by the masses albums,Ball Breaker rips Black Ice a new one.As do Flick and Fly. What I'm saying, every couple of years it seems they have to do a "radio" friendly album just so people still go, "WOW,they're better than I thought" It's a shame they have to make a "commercial" tune to do that, (I love Moneytalks but that song was written for the radio.) We'll see if the pattern continues with Black Ice's follow up.... Let's hope for a Flick Of The Stiff Upper Balls, around 2011 or 2012 Ha -Cheers
I laughed aloud at that one. I think most of us are on the same page here. Hard as a Rock, Honey Roll, Ballbreaker, Satellite Blues, Stiff Upper Lip, and some RNR Damnation would make an awesome album. As I've been listening to Black Ice recently, my major complaint is the mp3/digital sound of it. The guitars need to be cleaner, and Brian's voice needs to be more out front. i wonder how a mix of good bluesy stuff and hard ballbreaker style riffs would sound. Would the album come together?
And, about FOTW: I've never been able to get over Brian's voice being practically inaudible. I give it a listen once in a while, but I always end up wondering what they were smoking when they mixed it or whatever the term is.
Flick - "For Those About To Rock The Less Popular/Mainstream Album (although it could have been if it weren't in Back In Black's shadow)" lol, FTATR was their first US No.1
I think Stiff Upper Lip was better than Ballbreaker, but BB has a better audio quality. Stiff Upper Lip with BB producer, would have been tremendous!
Nice post RnRDamnation, I was thinking the same thing with a lot of your comments. The lyrics to many of the songs off of Ballbreaker are so obviously more creative and inspired than most of what they've done since the early eighties. The most logical reason for this is Rick Rubin. He didn't produce SUP or Black Ice and the lyrics went back to standard. The Young brothers didn't seem to enjoy Rubin as a producer and I can only guess Rubin pushed them to write the best songs they could and not settle for the typical AC/DC songs. As for what I'd like to see on the next album, the first thing which comes to mind is more up tempo songs. Black Ice didn't hardly have any, Wheels being the fastest song, a song I personally didn't care for at all. One thing I'd like to carry over from Black Ice is the production sound, all the instruments could be clearly heard. It's too bad so many AC/DC albums sound kind of crappy, especially the bass and rhythm guitar get lost in the mix. SUP, Ballbreaker, Blow Up Your Video, & Fly On The Wall all suffer to varying degrees with the production sound.
Jailbreakes- Yes that's true... BUT How many regular fans can name a track from For Those About To Rock other than the title track? Exactly,I mean the album is perfect yet,it gets no love from the band or really from the public.Just us, It is Back In Black's shadow,if For Those About To Rock, came after Highway To Hell would be right up there where Back In Black is in my opinion.
Flick Of The Stiff Upper Balls NEEDS to be made
Interesting stuff guys, and RNR Damnation, your expanding on my ideas was right on the money IMO. I have to disagree though on one thing, I think Ballbreaker had awful lyrics no matter how much I love the album. As for the Youngs' comment on Rubin focusing too much on the drums (which I never heard that quote before now), I say that's a good thing. I have always considered Ballbreaker to have the ideal AC/DC drum sound. Phil just sounds so powerful and tight on that album, it blows me away every time and makes you move to every song, even your least favorite on the album, lol. Also, Phil wanted to make a great comeback and you can hear it in his performances.
