Adelaide Concert Attendances
I've noticed that the popularity of the band seems to have decreased quite a bit over the past 10-15 years, if concert attendances are anything to go by. This is quite strange given that all the other Australian cities where they play, their concert attendances have remained constant or increased over the same period. And I can't think why this is the case. Consider this: 1981: Memorial Drive. No report on attendance, but the place fits around 8-9,000 in concert mode. Tickets were still on sale on the morning of the concert. So assume about 7-8,000 attended. 1988: Globe Derby Park. Various press reported between 15,000 and 20,000. 1991: Entertainment Centre (2 concerts). First show sold out 8,000. 2nd show about half full (apparently), say around 4-5,000. Total 12,000 - 13,000. 1996: Entertainment Centre (1 concert). Sold out about 1 month before the concert. Press reports attendance 8,000. 2001: Entertainment Centre (1 concert). Tickets still on sale on day of concert. Press reports attendance 7,000 (so it didn't sell out). All this time, the population of Adelaide has increased slowly to 1.1m. It's even more alarming if you compare this to Hobart's concert in 2001, 18,000 attended. Hobart had a population of about 0.2m back then, so about 10% of the population attended that show, although Hobart very rarely gets big acts, and many would have come from other parts of Tasmania (pop 0.5m). But even Canberra had over 12,000 attend in 2001 also (pop 0.3m). So the concern is that Adelaide could miss out on AC/DC next time they tour down under, as the crowds have got smaller for some inexplicable reason.
The first line of the above post should read "I've noticed that the popularity of the band in Adelaide..." Sorry for any confusion.
its kool..AC/DC wont ditch adelaide man, there aussie, they wouldn do that to their home country..itd be easy to get tix but?i gotta line up for hours to get em when they play sydney...but uve got nothin 2 worry about at all, theyll be there next tour round.
I remeber reading a book that in the Bon Era they threatened to leave Australia, because Australia didn't like Angus act with him pulling his pants down.
yea..AC/DC did boycott australian concerts of that time because ppl kept on banning them from playin at the last minute...so they left australia for a while
makiekle, You're probably right, AC/DC won't abandon Adelaide, maybe only because it has always been on their Aussie tours. It's hard to work out why on their last 2 concert tours here, they drew less than half of what turned up in 1988, and also had far less than both Canberra and Hobart - both much smaller cities. Next thing they'll be playing at Thebby (fits around 2,000 or so). If you ever want to be in one of the front rows for an AC/DC concert in Australia, just buy tickets to the Adelaide concert. In 1991, I lined up for 5 hrs, by the time tickets went on sale, there were only 10 people there, and I got 7th row centre stage (don't know how I didn't get closer). On the Bon era, reading some of those books, it sounded like the band were treated very harshly in Australia. I remember reading that they were banned from playing in some country areas, and also that the main reason the band couldn't tour back home is because the Aussie Govt would not grant Visas to Cliff Williams and also some of the road crew. No wonder they didn't play any concerts in Australia from ealy 1977 until 1981 (half of Bon's era, they never played in Australia!!!)
