Farewell Tour???
Riff Raff, Last night (March 17th, 2008) on "Eddie Trunk Live" on the XM satellite station The Boneyard, they were talking about tour news for various bands and supposedly the new AC/DC album and tour should be happening around the end of 2008. The disturbing news is Eddie is claiming that from a "reliable source" that this is going to be AC/DC's last tour and it will officially be announced that it is a "Farewell Tour". Supposedly the ticket prices are going to be expensive etc. etc.. If this is going to be their farewell tour, of course all of us true fans will be distraught but I am hoping that after they call it quits, they will start to release material from the archives like unreleased songs (hopefully some Bon rarities), dvd concerts (FULL LENGTH with all the tracks guys like a complete version of St. Albans) etc. etc. We'll see what happens I guess. Peace. Scotty from Detroit (acdc74)
Naaan, don't think so. Knowing AC/DC, they'll keep playing as long as they can play. They are not that old!
Daclarob said this (in not as many words): In 1980, the whole world wrote them off. They came back bigger than ever. Don't write them off now until you know. Now back to more original stuff: The Rolling Stones have kept touring and they've been out for over 40 years now...AC/DC have only been out 34 years (first true gig was New Year's Eve 1973). If the 'Stones can keep going without any really "new" stuff, what's saying AC/DC after this album won't just tour every few years. They love to play...look at 2003...they toured without an album.
And PS: I have a quote for stuff like this: "It's not over till it's over."
i dunno bout that.. i once heard Malcolm say something like "We'll keep playing till we think were not cut'n the mustard anymore.." so unless there running out of material for this new album,, i'd say they still got more in em
Don't ever mention the word "farewell" in the same sentence as AC/DC. Whoever does so should be 'taken care of". AC/DC sound just as good nowadays as they ever did. They'll be around until Angus runs out of energy. Won't be soon. Paul
This "farewell" news is just that >>MUSIC NEWS that is supposedly the rumor about AC/DC's future so I am here to simply pass on the information. DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER!!!!
It started like ten years ago with the Ballbreaker Album. They thought AC/DC had split up or this is the last tour. Anyway, when this is really the last AC/DC Tour the i want to meet the boys and say thank you to them.
I don't know. You kind of have to ask yourself after all this time - is this even fun for the brothers Young anymore? I suppose they could tour without a new album, because they do seem to get some joy out of audiences, but writing and recording new albums seems like a slog through piss-filled trenches and in the end, while the riffage may be pretty good, the albums on a whole just haven't been that satisfying for a long, long time. Not to mention the state of the recording industry. Why even bother to record CDs anymore when you can put out half-assed DVDs cobbled together by some schmuck in the marketing department of some major record label (ie - Plug Me In) and ride the wave of nostalgia to record sales? If you do record a new album and you don't like iTunes (as AC/DC don't, but somehow The Beatles do), how do you market and release it? The record industry has long been dead and everything for the last 5 years has been repeated beatings of that maggot-filled corpse of a horse. On the other hand, if AC/DC do embrace the digital changes which have happened since 2000, they can release their album online, generate a lot of buzz, make exclusive tracks available for different online vendors and then, finally, a la Radiohead, do an actual CD release which fans will buy out of the goodness of their hearts despite it being a dead format. But again, given all the obstacles above (including so-so output for the last 25 years), why bother with releasing new music at all? It's not like they're interested in music as music like Led Zeppelin and Neil Young are. It's more like they're interested in music as AC/DC, which extremely limits their range as they've basically been trying to recreate what they think they were in the 70s (which fans really loved) as opposed to just being what they are. In any case, even if they do an overpriced "farewell" tour (the first farewell tour like their heroes The Who), it will probably be a fantastic show.
Don't be so pessimistic, notangus. Ang and Mal have stated several times that they enjoy playing for the crowds and such, and besides, why would they become rockers if they didn't want to write songs? "I am hoping that after they call it quits, they will start to release material from the archives like unreleased songs (hopefully some Bon rarities)" They already said that they searched everywhere for material for Bonfire, and there was barely anything, so how could they find even more all of the sudden? Angus said they found stuff he didnt even know existed, so they've released everything they could find.
Oh yeah, and I saw an old article saying that the Razor's Edge tour would be their farewell tour, so don't listen to the radio broadcasts, they're as bad as the paparazzi.
I think for AC/DC it will come down to effort/energy and diminishing returns. They have a certain image of what they perceive to be a standard level of excellence. Once they feel they no longer can consistently deliver at that level I think they will still tour for a few more years, but will be a much smaller scale. Say a few dozen shows a year or more special appearances. I really only got into the band 15 years ago, and only rabidly in the last 10, so I take what ever shows I can get. If/when they tour this year I am planning to do some road trips, maybe see them in Boston, Montreal, Toronto, and would love to catch them in Melbourne at the same time as the MotoGP races, but chances of lining that up are slim.
